Japanese Hair Straightening

Japanese Hair Straightening

Japanese Hair Straightening, also called thermal reconditioning, permanent hair straightening, or rebonding, does not contain formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing agents. If done correctly by an experienced stylist, it can change your lifestyle. It is the most popular permanent straightening method, creating a straight, shiny, and low-maintenance style until it grows out.

The resurgence of Japanese Straightening, in popularity and demand since the Keratin & Brazilian Blowout trend, has been a nice comeback. The popularity of smoothing treatments in the past years is still strong. However, permanent hair straightening is still many of my clients’ favorites.

Most Japanese hair straightening brands are very similar. However, the Yuko System – the system we use here at Alyssa Baxter Keratin Studios – is extremely salon-friendly and has minimum odors. It is gentle at the same time and straightens hair without damage. When the solution is applied, it breaks down the bonds in the hair shaft, and through the 4-6 hour treatment, the hair is re-trained into straight, smooth, and shiny hair permanently – until your new hair grows.

If you are deciding on a Japanese hair straightening, book for your free phone consultation, we will assess your hair, ask you questions, and give you the best recommendation for your hair and your desired goals.

The best candidates for Japanese Straightening

The best candidates and not good candidates for Japanese Straightening are:

  • Perfect Candidates: Virgin hair – no color or highlights
  • Good Candidates: Solid dark and medium colors with 10 or 20 volume.
  • Not A Good Candidate: Highlights, bleach, or high lift colors, and chemically treated hair usually are not good candidates and may experience damage to their hair.
  • Not A Good Candidate: Ladies who have bleached or highlighted in the past, then colored it dark again or colored with black hair color.
  • Not A Good Candidate: If you generally don’t take care of your hair, don’t opt for this treatment. I have other treatments that may be a better option for you.
  • Tell us about the color or chemical treatments you have received during the past four years. The information you provide is very helpful in designing a treatment plan that will work for your hair. Used Henna? Let us know.

FAQ

Will it damage my hair?

Yes, some damage or dryness is expected without proper home care. Japanese Hair Straightening permanently straightens your hair while leaving it soft, smooth, and shiny, with less drying time and less need for styling tools or flat ironing. However, like any chemical treatment, such as hair coloring, highlights/balayage, or full bleaching on or off the scalp, Japanese Straightening also requires home care and maintenance to moisturize and nourish your hair.

Will I get hair breakage?

Yes. Post-care is vital to nourish and hydrate your hair for the following months. We recommend using high-quality Repair shampoos and conditioners and replenishing the moisture in your hair with a quality hair mask once a week. Coloring or bleaching permanently straightened hair will damage and break it.

How Long Does It Last?

Treated hair will remain straight permanently. Depending on how fast your hair grows, new growth will need to be straightened every six to eight months.

Will I need to blow dry my hair after Japanese straightening?

No, however, straightened hair takes much less time to blow dry. Blowdrying will give you the added benefit of straight, polished, smooth, silky-looking hair with incredible shine and finish.

Can I color my hair?

Only demi-permanent colors for root touch-ups and no bleaching.

How much does it cost?
